Underwater Exploration, Photography & Marine Conservation

Richard learned to dive and become an underwater photographer in 2002 while living in Seattle. Since then, he has been moved to share stories about oceans and marine life, and the peoples dependent on them. His love of diving, photography, and fascination with the Great Barrier Reef spurred a move to Australia in 2005 and an ongoing commitment to marine conservation.

In describing his approach to marine photography, Richard stated:

“The underwater world offers so many opportunities for emotive and interpretive story telling. When telling a photographic story,
I seek to gain the viewer’s participation and investment in the outcome of that story.”

Richard continues to explore and photograph underwater environments wherever he can, while sharing his passion for marine creatures and their conservation whenever possible. His marine images have been perennial finalists and semifinalists in the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition and Antibes Underwater Images Festival since 2006.

Animal & People Portraits

While seascapes inspire fascination, people most often invest in stories told through the experiences and emotions of other human beings and animals.

Evident in his work is the experience that has taught Richard to craft an empathetic and intriguing visual story around a animal, person, family, or group, that commits the viewer to understanding its subject, and in doing so, understanding the story as a whole.

Architectural Photography

In addition to his passion for marine wildlife photography, Richard has provided professional architectural photography services since 2002. He remains a registered architect in the United States, having earned a Master of Architecture degree at the University of Oregon, and has provided architectural services in the United States and Australia.
